FINAL RECRUITMENT FOR THE 2011 YOUNG TRADITION WEEKEND SHOWCASE CONTEST

The Showcase Contest at Waterfront Park in Burlington is the focus of the annual Young Tradition Weekend, which also includes a Friday afternoon school assembly, a Friday night family and contra dance with the Mad Robin Callers Collective with David Boulanger and Paul Marchand at Edmunds School, and a Saturday afternoon awards reception featuring the Windborne Trio, Mediha Jusufagic and the Bosnian Lilies and others at Union Station near Waterfront Park.  The showcase contest starts at about 10am and finishes by 3pm on Saturday May 14th.   Young singers, players and dancers perform 2 or 3 numbers solo, or in duos or groups.  Prizes include showcase performances at concerts and festivals (Champlain Valley Folk Festival, Dance Flurry, Festival Memoire et Racines, First Night! Burlington, New World Festival and more), cash ($1000 for 1st, $500 for 2nd, $250 for 3rd, $125 for 4th), camp scholarships, and more.  There are only 20 slots available, and most are already reserved…..  contact us now if you’re interested.  Other contestents include Benjamin and the Nogoodniks, Sarah Buteux, Ceol Millis, Roland Clark and Sam Bronner, Tom Conlogue, Jaden Gladstone, Mairead Holt, the Irregulars, Jeh Kulu Junior, Alya MacManaway, the McFadden Academy of Irish Dance, Jan Monteagudo-Meese, the Heather Morris Celtic Dancers, the Sap Run Fiddlers, Sarah Blair students, Te-am Murphy Whiteley and others.  We try to present things that are either directly related to or inspired by what is generally considered folk and traditional music or dance….. but if you think it fits, it probably does.  Previous 1st place winners are welcome to apply, but they must return in different group combinations and/or present a different genre of music or dance than the year they won.  Prospective performers who have not participated in the past should contact Mark Sustic at mrksustc@together.net or Young Tradition Weekend, PO Box 163, Fairfax, VT 05454.  We seek a balance of genres, instruments used, and traditions presented, etc. (i.e. not just fiddlers, dancers, singers, etc.).
